LOOP THE LOOP QUILT LAYER CAKE QUILT

Available Dates

September 5, 2026 at 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
10 spots available

Our new book Layer Cake Quilts is due out in November so we have been making lots of layer cake quilts. Layer Cakes are packs of forty-two 10in squares but you can of course cut your own from your fabric stash. This is our latest layer cake quilt pattern which is not in the book.  It will be featured in Today’s Quilter later in the year and will also be shown on the TV show Sewing Street. Cowslip Workshops is getting it first!

We have used colourful Kaffe Fassett layer cake squares and graded the colours from light to dark.  This will not be possible with all layer cakes but it is fun to try and juggle the colours a bit.  There is no wastage of fabric as the piano keys border is made from the offcuts from the layer cake squares. The blocks are simple to make and well within the scope of a competent beginner. Come and have some fun.

SUITABLE FOR CONFIDENT BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATE QUILTERS

REQUIREMENTS

Sewing machine with full bobbin

Normal sewing kit

Rotary cutting equipment

Fabric requirements for the Loop the Loop quilt (54in x 61½in):

  • one layer cake (42 10in squares). We used Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
  • 25m background fabric (we used pale aqua)
  • 5m binding fabric (not needed on day but we used the same as background fabric)

Sorting your layer cake squares

There is no need to sort your layer cake squares before class as the blocks can be sewn and then laid out to decide where they will go.

Getting ahead before class:

I know many will want to cut some background fabric before class as it does save time.  This is not essential and if you would prefer to cut the background fabric on the day that is fine.

If you would like to cut some before class:

Cut sixteen 3in strips across the width of the fabric

  • Take nine 3in strips and subcut each strip into five 3in x 8in rectangles to make a total of forty-two 3in x 8in rectangles (3 spare).
  • Take seven strips and subcut each strip into twelve 3in squares to make a total of 84 squares.

This is for the whole quilt so you won’t need all this on the day.

I look forward to seeing you on the day and if you have any questions before class please contact me on pam_lintott@hotmail.com.
